We walked into town from the motel then up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle. They were already setting up seating outside for the Tattoo in August, and there was a crowd outside the castle gates waiting to get in. Apparently there was a wedding party in there but the Queen was also around opening Parliament, so we weren't really sure what the hold up was. We decided not to hang around though, as we still had to drive up to Carnoustie to see my friend Lynn who I hadn't seen in 40 years.
We walked down the Royal Mile then back up to where we started, then back to the car for our two hour drive north-east to Lynn's place.
Even though it had been 40 years it was like it was only yesterday that we sat in our classroom at Tauranga Girls College in New Zealand, harassing our teachers and generally getting into trouble - myself more than Lynn if l remember correctly. Lynn was good at everything without even trying - English, Maths, Art, LATIN. She's just a genius really. When I got 8% for Latin she got 90 something. I should have hated her, but she and her crazy pommie family were such fun, how could I? But then they took her away, and despite my best efforts, did not manage to make contact until last year, when she just happened to google her name whilst on a course she was doing and found my post on Old Friends. Now of course there are plans afoot for more catchups, before we get Alzheimers and can't remember yesterday.
That night we went to the Carnoustie Golf Club ( famous PGA course) for the most amazing meal in an atmosphere reminiscent of a small town RSL in Oz. Lynn's husband Bob is an accomplished golfer and local identity, and we were made most welcome there.
Back at the Gillespies there was more whisky and wine, then bed for us as we had to drive down to Loftus in England the next morning to catch up with yet another set of friends not seen in a long time, the Hepplestons.
